End Piracy, Not Liberty

Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. The intent of the bills is to stop the illegal downloading of copyrighted material… the outcome will be far different.

SOPA and PIPA would allow the U.S. government to order the blocking of sites using methods similar to those employed by China and Egypt. Do we want to model our country after totalitarian regimes?

SOPA and PIPA would kill jobs by legislation and litigation. U.S. Internet companies would have to monitor everything users upload or link to or risk expensive litigation. It’s also why 55 of America’s most successful venture capitalists expressed concern that PIPA “would stifle investment in Internet services, throttle innovation, and hurt American competitiveness”. More than 204 entrepreneurs told Congress that PIPA and SOPA would “hurt economic growth and chill innovation”.

While SOPA and PIPA claim they will stop piracy, they won’t even accomplish that. Nefarious sites will just change their names while law abiding companies will suffer with constantly attempting to stay in compliance with mandates given them.

When you add it all up these proposed laws will censor, stifle the American economy and fail to achieve the claimed outcome. How could anyone support these pieces of legislation?

The Journey

The couple started their journey in the sun filled hills of Southern California. All was going well until the familiar “BANG!” that occurs when a nail pierces a tire. This caused the couple a short delay but the husband had been well prepared and placed a spare on quickly. The couple later used their GPS device to locate a tire shop on their route and quickly repair the flat tire. If this had been all that would have blighted their journey, the couple would have been extremely happy but unfortunately that was not the case.

Let’s jump forward a few hours…

Snow blasts through the sky giving a visibility of about ten feet. The couple use their GPS to help give them an idea of the serpentine of turns ahead while the couple trade off in the driver seat. The passenger scans anxiously ahead to help assist the driver in seeing the road side, road hazards and oncoming traffic. The couple continue to fight the ice and snow to arrive at their destination… over twelve hours later… with the husbands hands and feet numb from the exposure to ice and cold. They were glad that they had tire chains, ice scrapper, GPS, tire iron to break ice off the wheel well, and food/water in case they were stranded. The husband has been quoted as saying “the only more dangerous road I have been on was in a war zone and had bombs in the roadway”.

This is the tale of a couples travel to the 2011 LPCA Convention.

Lefty’s Reading Challenge

I just finished issuing certificates for Lefty’s Reading Challenge and boy has it been a challenge for me. Students had the opportunity to read from the library for the month of November and win a prize from the Speedway of:

  • A certificate of completion
  • One (1) complimentary ticket for a parent or guardian to the CampingWorld.com 300 on Saturday, Oct. 9
  • One (1) complimentary membership to Lefty’s Kids Club that gets kids 12 and under free to NASCAR Qualifying Day on Friday, Oct. 8 and the CampingWorld.com 300 on Saturday, Oct. 9
  • A complimentary CPKids meal at participating California Pizza Kitchens

Not as many students completed as I had hoped but it seems to have been a good incentive for those that did. It also took quite a bit of work to track but it has been worth it.

Busy, busy, busy

I have been so busy with work, moving and everything else in life that I have had little time to post here. I’ll some up a few things that have been keeping me busy.

o Anti-Checkpoint rally’s – We have been opposing the supposed “DUI” checkpoints in several areas.

o City council meetings – So far I have been to Colton, Grand Terrace, Moreno Valley and Highland and have made my self heard.

o Local LP business and social meetings from San Bernardino to Riverside to LA.

o Anti-Tax events such as supporting the Tea Party protest and then our own.

o I moved from an apartment to a house… it has been a lot of work.
